Jen Miller’s ‘spicy’ New Year’s [not a] resolution

DM_Register_Iowa-life-foodHappy New Year!

Our 2015 is off to a happy start. On the first Monday of the new year, we opened up the Des Moines Register and saw that we were featured in food writer Jennifer Miller’s column.

Miller’s not big on starting the year with an ambitious list of resolutions, “earnestly compiled then mostly ignored, a well-intentioned but poorly tended bed of roses reduced to guilt-inducing thorns.”

Instead, she opts for formulating “an unending supply of opinions, which I invite you to embrace or ignore as you wish — either at your own peril.”

Midway down the list, we were  ecstatic to see spices (and AllSpice) make her list:

Spices. I’ve been slowly working my way through my cluttered spice cupboard, throwing the antiques out (you know it’s old when the label was two branding incarnations ago) and replacing them, mostly with products from Allspice. I resolve to continue this until the whole cupboard is awash with Allspice labels. This isn’t so much about not buying other brands. It’s about having more fun picking spices out and because the locally owned store smells like heaven, and the people are nice times 10.

We’re still basking in the warm glow of Miller’s opinion of our store (and the “nice times 10” people who work here). What a nice way to start the new year!

We hope that your new year is off to a great start, too, with all the kudos and appreciation you deserve.
