Andy has co-owned AllSpice, along with Rory, since 2013. In that time, he has found “a ton” of products he’d call “life changing” and he shared three of them with us today:
- The Vanilla Paste for its wonderful flavor. It’s especially lovely in frostings and white cakes because, unlike a regular vanilla extract, you can see flecks of the vanilla bean in the foods you create with Vanilla Paste. It looks like you went to the effort of cooking with real vanilla beans. (No one needs to know you didn’t go to the trouble to scrape the bean yourself!)
- Love AllSpice Saigon Cinnamon for its rich, bold flavor.
- The Red Apple Balsamic Vinegar, for any fall salad. Andy’s favorite olive oil to pair it with is AllSpice’s Basil Olive Oil.
When asked what his favorite part of the job is, he said “Honestly, my favorite part of the job is interacting with our amazing customers! We meet people from all over the world, and they share with us their unique experiences and tell us all the different ways they use our products. I still learn something new every time I’m in the store.”
Andy loves to bake, and makes a mean casserole.
Here are “some questions you may not have thought to ask,” answered by Andy!
What’s the best meal you’ve ever had?
“Gosh, there have been so many good ones. I’m a huge fan of comfort food (and carbohydrates!). One stand-out is the time that Rory made a Thanksgiving-inspired waffle — it was out of this world. He started with a wet savory stuffing which he cooked in a waffle iron. That was topped with a few slices of turkey, then mashed potatoes and gravy. It was AMAZING! It’s probably the only meal I’ve literally had dreams about.”
Name your firstborn after a product we carry.
“It had better be a girl: Harissa Chanterelle Haning-Brown.” Yes, she’d be named after a hot chili paste and a fungus…the teenage years might be rough!
Who’s your favorite celebrity chef?
“I have to say I love watching Mary Berry. She loves baking and booze, and is a Commander of the Order of the British Empire! What’s not to love?”
What’s the biggest mess you’ve ever made in the kitchen?
“One time I was working on soup and didn’t have the top secured on the blender. It blew off mid-blend and covered the counter, cabinets, ceiling, and me with hot, tomato-based soup. Boy, was that a mess! I don’t think Rory is aware of that particular incident.”
Andy is typically in the shop on Monday mornings, and on the weekends. Next time you see him, say hi!
