Pi Day, March 14, 2017

Next Tuesday, March 14,  is Pi Day.

Pi Day is a modern holiday commemorating the ancient mathematical constant π (pi), or approximately 3.14. Pi Day is celebrated each year on March 14.

Get it? March 14 = 3.14 =∏ . Heh.

As you will [no doubt!] recall, ∏ is the ratio of the circumference of a circle [the distance around] to its diameter [the distance across the middle]. [And yes, this *will* be on the test.] If you have trouble remembering, this catchy Pi rap may help.

Even though we haven’t decided exactly how we’re going to honor Pi Day here at the store, there will definitely be some kind of pie involved. And we will probably eat that pie. It may be a pizza-pie, it may be a fruit pie, or it could even be a custard pie. But, as Rory likes to say, if there is a reason to eat, we’ll do it at AllSpice.

(We’ve got plenty of pie recipes in the AllSpice recipe database).

Pi-Day-Pies-Are-SquareUp at Wooden Spoons Workshop in Ankeny, chef-instructor Debbie Rose Cazavilan is spending National Pie Day teaching (no surprise) a Pi Day Pie Workshop:

National Pi Day is March 14th!

The Day that Pie Are Square!*

Come Celebrate at my place and learn to make a beautiful SQUARE Pie. (Cherry or Apple)

This class is 100% hands on. You’ll make and take home your own square masterpiece!

March 14th at 10:30 AM or 6:00 PM

You can find out more information about Deb’s Pi Day Pie Day on the Wooden Spoons website.

Want to nerd out while you eat your Pi Day pie? You can find out lots more super-geeky stuff about National Pi Day in this handy AllSpice blog post from 2012.

* Math nerd note – pies are square on Pi Day, March 14, because, well,

  • The number Pi or ∏ equals 22 ÷ 7 = 3.14 (get it? 3.14 = March 14?), and
  • the formula for finding the Area of a circle A = ∏ r² (which you read as pi(e) are squared).

Thus, March 14, Pi Day, is the day that PIE ARE SQUARE! Heh.
