State Fair Award-Winning Recipes Revealed

Here are the winners of AllSpice’s recipe contests at the 2012 Iowa State Fair:

Chocolate Snack Mix: BBQ Puppy Chow (a chocolate-peanut butter delight tossed with a homemade barbecue spice mix that includes Coriander, Paprika, and Cayenne)

Sweet and Salty Snack Mix: Berbere Party Mix combines surprising ingredients like Sriracha chili sauce, honey, and Berbere Spice!

Overall Best Snack Mix : departing from the traditional Chex-and-pretzels combo, this Chili Snack Mix uses pretzels, nuts, Goldfish crackers and Fritos as the backdrop for the sweet-spicy brown sugar-Chili flavor coating. The AllSpice staff call this one the “King of Snack Mixes.”

Chutney: Ten cups of Gooseberries combine with Allspice, Cinnamon, Cloves and Nutmeg for a generous batch of incredible, tart Gooseberry Chutney.

Sauerbraten: This rich, German roast beef dish was a special favorite of Alex, AllSpice’s founder. The award-winning Sauerbraten recipe relies on a homemade marinade that includes Red Wine Vinegar, Bay Leaf, Ginger and Cloves. The “gingersnap gravy” that accompanies the roast is out-of-this-world delicious.

Best-Dressed: This recipe for Momma’s Italian Dressing took first place for best vinaigrette at the State Fair. It’s hard to go wrong with spices, Olive Oil, and both Fig and Traditional Balsamic Vinegar.

Mustard: The number one pick among homemade mustard recipes was this Stout Ale Mustard, which features  a good stout beer (like Guinness, yum) mixed with Curry Powder, black and white Mustard seeds, and a range of other sweet and tart ingredients.

Ice Cream: We wrap up our feast of blue ribbon winners with dessert:  Cardamom Spice Ice Cream, creamy and delicious, with the unexpected kick of ground Cardamom.
