The ‘Mediterranean Diet’
Fruits, Good Fats, Physical Activity, Family and Friends
Have you heard of the Mediterranean Diet? Lots of customers have been stopping in recently, shopping for ingredients and telling us enthusiastically about how they’re eating more healthfully on this diet.
We’re not usually very big on diets (the word alone makes us feel hungry), but the Mediterranean Diet’s guidelines sound a lot like how we’re usually cooking, eating and entertaining anyway. Check it out:
The Mediterranean diet stresses:
- Mostly eating plant-based foods (fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts)
- Replacing butter with healthy fats, such as olive oil (!!)
- Using herbs and spices, instead of salt, to flavor foods
- Eating fish and poultry at least twice a week (we have lots of fish recipes, and poultry recipes to spark your imagination)
- Limiting red meat to no more than a few times a month
- Drinking red wine in moderation — (this is optional, but possibly our second-favorite guideline)
- The importance of being physically active
- and, our favorite rule, enjoying meals with family and friends.
(Here we are, riding our bikes over to Gusto Pizza last summer – pizza is clearly Mediterranean, right?)
