You *Do* Want To Watch This Sausage Being Made

Otto_Fürst_von_BismarckThere’s a very famous old quote you probably know, uttered by a dude you probably haven’t heard of. It goes like this: “Laws are like sausages, it is better not to see them being made.”

Otto von Bismarck (right), who uttered that quote, was a conservative Prussian nobleman, diplomat, and politician who unified Germany in the 1860s, was Chancellor of the German Empire for the next several decades, and … well, you get the picture. He presumably knew a lot about law-making.

Back in Bismarck’s day, the lawmaking process, like the sausage-making process, was conducted behind closed doors, the finished product composed of suspect and possibly unsafe or unsavory components, and would be repulsive to behold, were you uninitiated to the whole undertaking.

Plus ça change, eh?
