After one hundred years of connecting the East Village to the west side of Downtown Des Moines, the Grand Avenue bridge closed this week for a year-long replacement project.
The city says the repair is “essential for the safety of residents and visitors.” But it’s also going to take a little getting used to, if Grand Avenue is your main route to come visit us here at AllSpice.
Here are some alternate routes you can take (pictured above): the Locust Street (where AllSpice is located), Walnut Street, and Court Avenue bridges across the Des Moines River are all open and accessible. They’ll be closed and replaced, one by one, after the Grand Avenue bridge project is completed.
Robert Ray Drive, the north-south street adjacent to the Grand Ave bridge, is closed, too — but alternate crossing streets 2nd Avenue and 3rd Street (on the west side of the river) and East 4th, 5th and 6th Streets on our side of the bridge remain open.
