When it comes to new year’s resolutions, typically we resolve to begin doing something new. This year the AllSpice crew is trying something a bit different… resolving to simplify, to do less.
Our overall goal to simplify will result in us slowing our roll in a few places (buying stuff we don’t need, overcommitting with an already busy schedule, spending time worrying about things we can’t control, and starting too many projects at once are a few that come to mind). A big one for AllSpice co-owners Andy and Rory is resolving to eat out less.
“In 2019 we found ourselves with packed schedules. It’s almost like we need to simplify!” says Andy. “With the busyness came a little (okay, maybe a lot) more eating out than our waistbands could handle. So this week we got back in the kitchen and did some housekeeping to set ourselves up for success.” Here’s what they did:
- Out with the old. First on Andy’s and Rory’s agenda was cleaning out the refrigerator and pantry. Turns out they didn’t need six squeeze bottles of mustard or those garbanzo beans that expired in 2017. “We also took the opportunity to refresh the spice rack.” says Rory. He went on to share it’s a good practice to take a look at your spices quarterly to toss out any aging items, replacing them with fresh jars. A good rule of thumb is to replace your spices every 1 to 1 1/2 years. While most of them won’t go bad, they’ll lose their potency over time, and won’t add as much to your dish. If you continue to use older spices, you’ll want to bump up the quantity by 1/4 or 1/2 to compensate for the age of the spices.
- Make a plan. For Rory and Andy, having a plan is important. “If we arrive back home at the end of the day and don’t have a plan, we end up at a restaurant.” They plan to sit down on Sunday mornings and make their meal plan for the week and do the shopping. Rory uses this meal planning pad from Knock Knock, but a simple calendar will also do.
- Make it fun. “When we meal plan, we try to include a recipe we’ve never made before and to include at least one meal we intend to share with others.” says Andy. “This way we get to experiment with new foods and spend time with people we enjoy, sharing a (hopefully) delicious meal.”
